Steel or Wood-Based Garage Cabinets: Heat, Damp Air and Edges

Garage Cabinets Coast Torrance compares steel and wood-based garage cabinets for a Torrance garage, where the problem is less a hot day than a damp morning, and where the weak points are the cut edges, the floor contact and the hinges.

Damp is the bigger problem

Torrance is a coastal city on Santa Monica Bay with about 13.6 inches of rain a year, almost all of it between November and March, and marine-layer mornings in between. A garage floor is cold concrete, and cold concrete collects moisture on a damp morning. Heat matters too, especially near a water heater or in a car-warmed bay, but a garage here is more often damp than hot.

The materials side by side

Box material Damp air Heat Weak point
Powder-coated steel Resists corrosion better than bare metal Handles it; paint can fade in strong sun A chipped coat; cheap hinges
Melamine on particleboard Fine until the core sees water Fine at normal garage temperatures Raw cut edges
Thermofoil on MDF Similar to melamine The film can lift near a heat source Corners and edges
Plywood box with a laminate face Holds up better than particleboard Fine Cost; sealed edges still count
PVC or HDPE panels Does not take up water Can soften near a hot surface Heavy loads on a long span

The edge and the floor

Two details do most of the work. The first is the edge: every cut end of a particleboard or MDF panel needs a band or a seal, because a raw end draws water in and the swollen core does not shrink back. The second is the floor: a box that stands on legs or a toe kick that stays clear of the slab keeps a splash away from its core.

A damp wall is a third. A garage cut into a hillside can have one wall that sweats, and the cause is looked at before cabinets are fastened to it.

Hinges, slides and fasteners

Hardware often wears before the box does. Plain zinc-plated hinges and handles can show their age early in salty air, and drawer slides need a rated load. Corrosion-resistant hardware is a priced option on the calculator for exactly this reason. No cabinet is rust-proof; the maker's care instructions and a touch-up of any chip are part of owning one.

What each costs

Installed in Torrance, base cabinets run about $140–$260 per linear foot for melamine or thermofoil, $200–$380 for steel and $260–$480 for plywood, before the wall cabinets and extras. A saving on the box is real, but it is smaller than the price of replacing a swollen run.

Step 1 Range —
    What is the project?

Cabinets for the walls, racks and wall storage, or storage for a shop or business.

How long is the wall run?

Typical: one full wall of a two-car garage, about 20 linear feet.

Add up the wall lengths you want covered, in feet; corners count once.

    Which kind of cabinets?

Typical: powder-coated steel; damp coastal air is easier on it than on raw particleboard.

    Which cabinet heights?

Typical: base and wall cabinets. Tall cabinets add the most and are anchored to studs.

    Anything extra? optional

Skip if none apply; a bench, a rack and lighting are the usual extras.

How many feet of wall or rack?

Typical: 16 feet of wall, about a car's length and a half.

    Which kind of storage?

Typical: PVC slatwall, which does not swell in damp air.

    Add hooks?

One choice; hooks priced per foot of wall.

    Anything extra? optional

Racks are priced each; the ceiling is checked before any rack is planned.

What kind of space is it?

Pick the space that holds the most tools or parts.

How long is the wall run?

Typical: two walls, about 40 linear feet.
