Why made-to-fit

A modular steel cabinet comes in set widths. A custom box is cut to the space, which matters in a garage with a water heater alcove, a sloped ceiling or a wall that is a few inches off square. Custom boxes can also reach the ceiling, fill a gap beside the door or wrap a corner without a stack of filler strips.

The trade-off is lead time and price per foot. A made-to-fit order is built after the measure, so the garage is measured carefully first and the dates come from the maker.

Core, face and edge

  1. Core. Particleboard, MDF or plywood. The core decides how a box behaves when moisture reaches it.
  2. Face. Melamine, a resin paper fused to the core; or thermofoil, a vinyl film heated onto MDF; or a plywood face with laminate.
  3. Edge. A band that seals the cut edge. A raw or chipped edge lets damp air reach the core, which swells and does not shrink back.

Sealed and raw edges on a melamine panel. A melamine panel is a particleboard core with a thin face on both sides. An edge band seals the cut end; a raw end lets damp air reach the core, which swells.

What the numbers show

  1. Melamine face A resin-paper surface fused to both sides of the core; easy to wipe.
  2. Particleboard core The body of the panel; it takes up water if it is exposed.
  3. Edge band A strip that seals the cut end of the core.
  4. Exposed, swollen core A raw end that has absorbed moisture and swollen; it does not shrink back.

Colors and doors

Makers show seven to a dozen color families, usually whites, grays, charcoals and a few wood looks, plus flat or framed doors. Colors on a screen shift from monitor to monitor, so ask for a sample board and look at it in the garage's own light. Gloss shows fingerprints and scratches more than matte.

What custom boxes typically cost in Torrance

System Per linear ft, base and wall 20 linear ft
Melamine or thermofoil custom boxes $230–$450 $4,600–$9,000
Plywood custom boxes (premium) $350–$670 $7,000–$13,400

Base cabinets alone run about $90–$190 less per foot. A made-to-fit tall wall is extra, and so are lighting, locks and a worktop. Market estimates, not quotes.

Custom Garage Cabinets — common questions

Are melamine cabinets a bad idea in a garage?

They are common and can work when the edges are sealed and the base stays off wet concrete. Raw cut edges are the weak spot, because damp air that reaches a particleboard core makes it swell.

How long do custom cabinets take to arrive?

The maker's lead time decides, and it starts after the garage is measured and the plan is approved. Ask for it in writing together with the install days.

Step 1 Range —
    What is the project?

Cabinets for the walls, racks and wall storage, or storage for a shop or business.

How long is the wall run?

Typical: one full wall of a two-car garage, about 20 linear feet.

Add up the wall lengths you want covered, in feet; corners count once.

    Which kind of cabinets?

Typical: powder-coated steel; damp coastal air is easier on it than on raw particleboard.

    Which cabinet heights?

Typical: base and wall cabinets. Tall cabinets add the most and are anchored to studs.

    Anything extra? optional

Skip if none apply; a bench, a rack and lighting are the usual extras.

How many feet of wall or rack?

Typical: 16 feet of wall, about a car's length and a half.

    Which kind of storage?

Typical: PVC slatwall, which does not swell in damp air.

    Add hooks?

One choice; hooks priced per foot of wall.

    Anything extra? optional

Racks are priced each; the ceiling is checked before any rack is planned.

What kind of space is it?

Pick the space that holds the most tools or parts.

How long is the wall run?

Typical: two walls, about 40 linear feet.

    Which kind of storage system?

    Typical: heavy-gauge steel cabinets.
